Renaturing Spaces for Outdoor Learning
We work with schools, charities and community groups to breathe new life into unloved outdoor spaces, creating greener, more welcoming places for Urban Forest School, outdoor learning, horticulture therapy and more. Corporate partners help make this possible by providing funding, materials and volunteers to turn plans into reality.
🌱 We plan.
We visit unloved or underused outdoor spaces to understand their potential, then develop simple, practical plans to transform them into places people want to use. To date, we have helped transform 11 schools and 2 community spaces - at no to low cost.
🌳 We deliver.
Using available funding or donations, we organise the materials, logistics and teams needed to bring the plans to life. We prioritise sustainable, natural and low-maintenance materials, alongside flexible elements that can be adapted as the space evolves.
🌿 We maintain.
We can also run outdoor sessions to help site owners make the most of their new spaces, while also helping to care for, and maintain them. We provide Urban Forest School clubs and day sessions for many schools, and plant wellness sessions for adults in other spaces.
What is Urban Forest School?
Urban Forest School is an approach inspired by woodland-based Forest School, adapted to work in urban playgrounds, sites and with urban kids who may have limited access to green space.We work with multiple primary schools across London to deliver our approach, which has been refined over many years by Urban Forest School specialist Nina.We also provide UFS or outdoor education sessions during daytime curriculum time, using a variety of techniques and approaches to encourage nature connection in children.
Case Study: William Patten School
William Patten Primary in Hackney wanted to bring more nature into its playgrounds and create spaces for learning, play and community use.We helped the school transformed an underused area by removing 165m² of plastic astroturf and introducing native planting, trees, a sensory and nature play space, wildlife habitats and a pond. We also created an all-weather outdoor classroom and medicinal herb garden.The result is a greener, more biodiverse and climate-resilient space, giving children and the wider school community more opportunities to connect with nature.
